Try connecting the printer cable to a different USB port. If you can't save a scanned file to the computer, then the problem could be the USB cable - but you said that you tried another cable with no change - or it could be the USB port on your computer. To the computer? If that's what you mean, the cable and the USB port on your computer appear to be working, so the fault would seem to be in the printer itself.
Does "works fine when scanning" mean that you can scan a document and save a file (e.g., a pdf file) You write that the "printer works fine when scanning and copying." Copying is, of course, a function that the device does without involving the computer. This sounds like a bad connection between your printer and your computer. There should be no entry for the Canon MX330, but if there is, select it and click "Remove" remove both the driver and the package.Click on the link for "Print server properties" in the tool bar at the top of the Devices and Printers window (this link will not appear if you are unable to do step 7).
Click on any other icon in the "Printers and Faxes" category (assuming that there is at least one icon remaining). If the icons for your MX330 printer and MX330 fax are still there, right-click on each of them and select "Remove device"
If troubleshooting a communication issue, reconnect the data cable (not applicable to WiFi, Bluetooth or Infrared).
I don't have a definitive answer for you and the following are only guesses. Now select (click on) "Device Disconnect" and you should see "Windows Hardware Remove.wav" click the "Play" button to listen. After you select "Device Connect" you should see "Windows Hardware Insert.wav" under Sounds click the "Play" button to listen to the sound effect. In the "Program Events" window, scroll down until you see "Device Connect" and click on that to select it.Go to Control Panel and set the view (upper right corner) to "Small icons".If you aren't sure of what you're listening for, you can hear the sound effects as follows: You should hear the two-tone "Device connect" sound.
With the printer connected to your computer, turn off the printer. In my reply to your question about "offline" status, I asked if you hear the sound effects when you connect the printer. I suspect that's why the troubleshooter wants you to set the Fax functionality of the device as the default printer. It seems that for some reason, Windows is having a problem communicating with your printer. I've never found the Windows "troubleshooters" to be particularly helpful.
